Comments

This film, directed by Rob Brown, and written by Line Langebek and Rob Brown, shows and says so much without having to spell it out in words, which, of course, is the essence of good cinema. In a series of bleak images, the story is told with absolute certainty, and the few words that are spoken really count. One is left wanting more: wanting to know what happens to the two desperate heroines, pursued by their archetypically cruel masters. The acting, by Cristina Catalina as Liliana, and by the English actress Joanne Froggatt as Anya, is excellent. Natalie Holt’s haunting music matches the bleak images perfectly; its echoing quality is full of yearning and despair. The film echoes more than Anya’s past experience; it echoes male repression, exploitation and cruelty through the ages.
