Michael Caine to Receive 2009 BIFA Variety Award

Seventy-six years ago, a fish market porter and a cook/charlady gave birth to a baby boy that would later be one of only two men to be nominated for an Oscar in five consecutive decades. Born Maurice Micklewhite, he soon took on the name of Michael Caine and as of November 16, 2000—Sir Michael Caine.

The English actor, cockney accent still intact, is the recipient of the Variety Award at the 2009 British Independent Film Awards on December 6. In his career, beginning shortly after his time serving in the Korean War, Caine has appeared in over 100 films. His versatility and timelessness is highlighted with the range of the characters he flawlessly portrays—from Alfred Pennyworth, a faithful butler to Bruce Wayne aka Batman, to Austin Power's father, Nigel, in Goldmember to Dr. Wilber Larch in The Cider House Rules.

Caine won his first Oscar in 1986 for his performance in Hannah and Her Sisters and his second in 1999 for The Cider House Rules. His prevalence in film never falters, appearing in films like Sleuth, Miss Congeniality, The Italian Job, and The Prestige—all different times, reaching different audiences and generations. His most current project is Harry Brown, expected to release next year. He's done it all, a brilliant choice for the Variety Award.
