Relationships in Films

“It’s not you. It’s me.” 5 words. One shrivelled heart. Break-ups are never easy. Dumping is never easy either. I was mindlessly tweeting on the web last night, when I came across this site: Idump4u.com. The site offers to do the dirty dumping for you; basic break-up for $10, $25 for engagement break-up and $50 for a divorce call. Go to the site and you can view recorded exchanges of a hired “idump4u” employee ripping off the band-aid of a particular relationship. We can see nasty break-ups online…but what about in films?

The answer is: YES, YES and YES! Need proof? –“The Break-Up,” “The Couples Retreat,” “Legally Blonde,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” “17 Again,” “Runaway Bride,” “Bridget Jones Diary,” “(500) Days of Summer”………

Break-ups are what drive the films of today. It is what makes a film interesting, ha-ha funny, and addicting to watch. If a relationship is not the underlying theme of a film, then I don’t know what is. The whole point of making relationship the basis of a film is because of: audience relevance. By watching actors breaking-up, making-up, going through a whirlwind of love-hate stages, we can relate to their experience with what’s happening in our personal intimate lives. When was the last time you thought the main character was you? When was the last time you could see your break-up unfolding in the film?

A-ha, see, troubled or perfect relationships inevitably exist in our world, and they will inevitably get transferred into movie-screens, with a tinge of exaggeration.

Next time you get dumped, don’t sit and ball your eyes out. You’re not alone. Switch on a film and you can see your break-up be mimicked.
